Why Flat Collars are Dangerous for your Dog

They come in all kinds of colors and designs, we can attach identification tags to them, and some even light up in the dark! But, flat collars aren't what you should be using to walk your dog.

Flat collars offer loads of benefit, but none as far as teaching your dog to walk nicely on a leash. When it comes to walking your dog, keep these things in mind:

-If your dog is pulling forward, they are putting 100% of the collar pressure on their trachea, aka their wind pipe! If you hear a dog wheezing during pulling, they are strangling themselves. It is NOT fun to exercise if you can't breathe.

-Flat collars tend to slide down towards the shoulders of a dog. The closer the collar gets to the shoulders, the more pulling power they have. Think about this the next time you notice your dog pulling your arm off on a walk.

-When a dog feels pressure, they pull against that pressure. A flat collar makes it easier for them to pull you and put overwhelming force on their trachea. It is difficult to break the pressure on a flat collar once a dog is pulling.

So if flat collars aren't good on walks, we should all just never attach our leashes to our dog's neck, right?

WRONG.

Your dog will be safer in a slip collar, prong collar, slip chain, or martingale collar. These tools will allow you to release pressure and apply pressure to effectively communicate with your dog.

If you do not know what these tools are, do not know how to properly use these tools, or have questions contact us and we will help you. Remember, β€œThe tool isn't the magical solution, knowledge, skill set, technique, timing, and TRAINING is.”
